For most people, a subway tunnel would be an extremely stressful environment. There are dozens of ways to easily die down here, and a dozen more ways to end up in jail. I’m unbothered by any of this. Like Bane I was born into this environment, molded by it.
Thus, it should be of little surprise that I manipulated this environment to my own creative desires.
This photo set often confounds viewers. The setting is clear: a dark subway tunnel for sure, but the blur – how is it both blurry and shockingly detailed all at once? This isn’t photoshop/AI trickery. It’s a patient hand on the shutter, awaiting the exact split second to fire off a strobe, capturing the details, while allowing a simultations long exposure to capture the chaotic motions of the underground.
Despite the subways existing for over one hundred and twenty years, and seemingly no end to the photographers and explorers who have taken to the tunnels in recent years, I’ve yet to see any truly replicate this style.
Each print is a 1 of 1 print run, from a digital photo, shot specifically for an illegal art show hosted inside of an NYC bridge in 2021. No replications will be created. Each print comes with a Certificate of Authenticy attesting to these facts.
