Description
Back in 2017, then NY State Governor Andrew Cuomo spent a significant amount of resources rebuilding infrastructure across the state. The replacement of the Kościuszko Bridge (along the Brooklyn Queens expressway) was one such project. The original 1939 truss bridge was replaced with two new bridges, placed side by side. When the first new bridge was completed, traffic was diverted onto it allowing for demolition of the original bridge and construction of the second span within its footprint.
Several buildings and homes were demolished to make way for the new structure. I spent quite a bit of time accessing and documenting all of them. After traffic was diverted, I had a small window of time to photograph the old bridge before it was torn down.
Luck was on my side. One early summer night, I approached the old roadway and found no guards, no ‘no trespassing’ signs, and no fences. Without any of the above, crossing the old bridge was technically not illegal. Walking up the roadway was akin to entering another world.
While easy access is always a lucky blessing, the weather couldn’t have been better. A rare bout of thick fog blanketed the city, and the bridge was tall enough to be in the clouds. And just off to the side was the new bridge – complete with bright color changing lights, which set the clouds aglow. The resulting photos are proof of something any serious photographer knows all too well: great photos are maybe 25% technical skill, and 75% timing and luck.
